There is a certain amount of folklore concerning emeralds, they are wonderful stones however it is true that they are the softest of the precious gemstone category and so more susceptible to being damaged.
An emerald is a part of the beryl family which are rare hence so are emeralds. The very best are mined in Columbia, followed by those from Zambia and lastly Brazil. A good example of a Columbian emerald can command extraordinarily high prices.
The classic rectangular, octagonal, cut of the gemstone is called the ’emerald cut’, which in turn describes that type of cut across all gemstone types.
