The ruby is a member of the corundum family of gems with chromium being the trace element which causes the colour. The very best examples are Burmese with those described as ‘pigeon blood’ red being the most sought after. In a similar manner to their close cousin sapphires, rubies are often heat treated to enhance their colour, with the finest, most valuable examples being un-heat treated.
The stones had been taken from an old ring which needed our redesign input, the hand-drawn sketch offered alteratives for the client.
Yellow gold settings secure the rubies which are surrounded by diamonds, the split shoulder shank is yellow gold.
The design sees a cabochon ruby collar mounted with diamond set shoulders in the central triple ring all in 18 carat yellow gold.
The finished ring demonstrates how the diamond detail helps to frame the cabochon ruby, to produce a very unique bespoke engagement ring.
The idea behind the design is that of a red and white flower blooming to reveal the central diamond.
The central, collar set, round brilliant cut diamond is fringed by a double circle of grain set rubies and diamonds, all in white gold.
