There is quite a folklore around emeralds and so can be damaged more easily than diamond or corundum, it is true they are the softest of the fine gemstones. Traditionally the best examples were mined in Columbia followed by Zambia, emeralds are found in Madagascar, Canada and Brazil also.
The traditional rectangular/octagonal cut carries the name ’emerald cut’ which is used to describe the cut with diamonds, sapphires, rubies amongst others.
The examples below show emeralds of Zambian origin.
The oval cut emerald is flanked by round brilliant cut diamonds, set in platinum claw mounts with a yellow gold shank.
Here we see a square/octagonal cut emerald, set in 18 carat yellow gold flanked by round brilliant platinum set diamonds.
Tradition has it that coloured gemstones are mounted in yellow gold, however the choice is yours to make.
Our customer was clear in what he wanted to achieve, possibly because he is a garden designer, Amanda’s design drawing brought those thoughts to life.
A fine emerald cut stone (1.16 carats) flanked by emerald cut diamonds all set into hand-made 18 carat yellow gold and platinum mount.
With our customer the design evolved to see an emerald cut emerald , with square cut sapphires channel set either side with the edge wires being grain set with small round diamonds.
Set in platinum, this highly original ring was very much appreciated by the recipient.
The emerald and old rose cut diamonds has been unset from an old, worn out, ring. Notice the irregularity in shape of the diamonds.
We advised to collar set the ring, not only to protect the emerald but to help disguise the differing diamond shapes.
Mounted in 18 carat yellow gold and ready to be enjoyed for many a year.
